This event is part of the official rollout of TransitMatters' latest report, Regional Rail Proof of Concept: How to Provide Frequent, All-day Service on the Worcester Line. The event will be held Tuesday, 9/17 at 2 PM in conjunction with the Worcester Regional Chamber at their office in Downtown Worcester.

The Commonwealth faces a decade of significant vehicular mobility disruption on Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) due to anticipated reconstruction and relocation of the elevated highway approaching downtown Boston and private sector air rights developments in the same area. The need for frequent and reliable transit and rail mobility along this corridor is urgent.

Our follow-up to last year's report puts forth both short-term and long-term solutions for the Metro West-Worcester corridor. The ultimate goal is a transition to Regional Rail (a vision for fast, frequent, all day, electrified service set forth in our Regional Rail report).

Proof of Concept: Regional Rail 2.0 Launch - 12 Sep, 2019

This event is the official rollout of TransitMatters' latest report, Regional Rail Proof of Concept: How Modern Operating Practice Adds Capacity to the Current Commuter Rail Network. The event will be held Thursday at 1 PM at Conservation Law Foundation in Downtown Boston

Our follow-up to last year's report highlights how modernized operating practices can maximize the number of trains at South Station, adding capacity to the MBTA’s current commuter rail system. South Station Expansion is wasteful & unnecessary. We advocate for trying out our low-cost approach to increasing train throughout & capacity before we go down the rabbit hole of another multi-billion expenditure... an approximately $2 billion to $3 billion one. Especially given massive needs elsewhere.

Beer & Transit - 22nd January: Red-Blue Connector

Join TransitMatters on January 22nd 6-8pm at Harvard Gardens for Beer & Transit, a meetup to discuss the Red-Blue Connector and other transportation-related topics that affect the Greater Boston area.

January 22nd’s event will feature Fred Salvucci, former Secretary of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and current Senior Lecturer at MIT. During his tenure in government, Salvucci emphasized the expansion of the transit system, development of the financial and political support for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project and the design of implementation strategies consistent with economic growth in compliance with the Clean Air Act.

Admission to Beer & Transit is free and open to the public. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

T Board Wants All-Night Service Proposal Vetted

THE MBTA OVERSIGHT BOARD on Monday put on hold a plan to add additional bus routes to mitigate the cancellation of late-night service until a more sweeping proposal for all-night bus service can be vetted.

The T’s Fiscal Management and Control Board was intrigued enough by a proposal put forth on March 30 in CommonWealth magazine by three transportation advocates – Ari Ofsevit, Jeremy Mendelson, and James Aloisi – to put on hold a staff recommendation to add the bus routes.

In their article, the three advocates suggested expanding an existing bus service for early-morning workers to provide all-night service every day of the week. The proposal called for selected buses to run on an hourly basis during the night from most areas served by the T to a central point such as Copley Square, where passengers could make connections to their final destination. One bus route would run to Logan Airport, where nearly half of all shifts begin before MBTA service starts. The advocates said they believed the expanded service “would cost on the order of $1 million per year.”

Our Plan for All Night T Service

WE BELIEVE THERE is an affordable pathway toward establishment of a robust late-night transit service on the MBTA, building on the T’s existing early morning bus service. Our plan would not just offer service on Friday and Saturday nights, as the recently canceled late-night experiment did, but instead offer service all night, every night, and be geared primarily toward getting people to their late-night and early morning jobs.
